Start Microsoft Excel and open a new or existing worksheet.
You need a workspace to input your data and perform calculations.

In a column, enter the "Data" points for which you want to calculate variance.
Each value should be in a separate cell.

Click on an empty "Cell" where you want the variance result to appear.
This cell will display the calculated variance.

Type the formula for variance in the selected cell For sample variance, use: =VAR.S(A1:A10)
Choose VAR.S for a sample of a population

This will execute the formula, and the variance will appear in the selected cell.
